I created an illustrated deck of cards themed around 12 Falmouth pubs. Whilst at university, my friends and I would always bring a pack of cards whenever we would go for a drink. It’s an easy way to spend an evening and grew us closer - even with a little bit of competition involved. I thought a good way to honour my time in Falmouth would to create this deck featuring 12 of the most well-known pubs and bars in town, each with its own charm and atmosphere.
THE CLUBS
To me, clubs is a sporty or masculine suit. It yells at the football. It drinks a lot of beer. I chose pubs around Falmouth that had atmosphere - an abundance of lads and the sports channel on 24/7.
THE DIAMONDS
Diamonds are a very exquisite feminine feel. They drink cocktails and whisper secrets. For these I chose Falmouth pubs with unique, whimsical, and intimate aesthetics.
THE SPADES
The spades have a more mature theme. They work a 9 to 5 and go out for a drink after. The have a schedule - even a diary. I looked at pubs around Falmouth that felt more grown-up. Some serve food, others are just expensive. Some do both.
THE HEARTS
The hearts embody the heart of Falmouth. The soul of the town which comes together in pubs. I chose pubs which are particularly social and playful with cosy corners to sit and sip a pint in.
THE OTHERS
The jokers are based on two of Falmouth’s food-themed nightclubs. Most of the funny stories tell from a night out normally wind up coming from a trip from one of these. Also an info card for the deck and the back design which uses the ship from the Falmouth University crest.
